The term ‘yarn weight’ refers to the thickness of the thread, not the weight of the ball or even of the thread itself. As different fibers have different densities, a yard of a fluffy aran wool may weigh less than a yard of 4ply cotton, even though the aran is the ‘heavier’ yarn.
